How long does it take to fly from London to Manchester?

The flight takes about 60 to 75 minutes from London Heliport in Battersea to Manchester, which is an hour and a bit in the air. By road the same trip is 193 miles and takes at least 4 hours 9 minutes even when every motorway is running freely. That makes London to Manchester one of the most useful routes for the helicopter: the saving is around three hours each way before you count anything that goes wrong on the road.

The range depends on where you start. Luton is the closest London-area site to Manchester at 112.8 nautical miles, and a flight from there takes roughly 50 to 65 minutes. Biggin Hill, on the south-east edge of London, is the furthest at 148 nautical miles and takes roughly 65 to 85 minutes. We tell you the likely figure for your exact pair of sites when we quote.

Which sites do you use at each end?

At the London end the choice is mostly about where you are starting. Elstree in Hertfordshire and Denham in Buckinghamshire are helicopter-friendly aerodromes on the north-west side of the capital, so they suit people coming from the M25 belt, Hertfordshire or the Thames Valley. Both are prior-permission-required, and Elstree has a short 651 metre runway, so they are for helicopters and light aircraft rather than jets. RAF Northolt is an active military station: bookings go through its commercial booking cell and a permission number is issued the day before the flight. Luton and Stansted are full airports where we book slots and handling for you. Our Elstree, Denham and Luton pages carry the detail.

At the Manchester end, Manchester Airport has a 24-hour customs facility and two 3,050 metre runways, but it is slot-coordinated and a handling agent is mandatory, so we book early. The city's heliport at Barton is about five miles west of the centre, with a departure lounge and free parking, and is booked by us with your flight. From Barton, the flight from London Heliport is roughly 65 to 80 minutes.

The route in practice

The direct line from London to Manchester runs north-west across the Midlands and over the edge of the Peak District, so most of the flight is over open country rather than built-up areas. We plan the exact track with air traffic control on the day, because controlled airspace around Luton, the Midlands airports and Manchester shapes the route.

Weather and airspace affect timings. A strong headwind can add minutes, low cloud can change the height we fly at, and a busy Manchester arrival can mean a short hold. We build that into the block time, which is why we give a range rather than a single number.

Who flies London to Manchester and why

Most of the demand is business. A leadership team that needs to be in both cities on the same day, a legal or financial team heading to a client meeting, or an executive who cannot afford to lose a working morning on the M1 and M6 all get the day back. Our page on same-day business trips explains how those days are arranged.

The other regular reason is events. Match days at the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford are a natural fit for corporate hospitality, as are race meetings across the north. For principals who are moved by a close-protection team, a point-to-point flight cuts the number of public stops, and our guide to secure helicopter transport covers how that is planned.

A there-and-back day, with the numbers

Take a London to Manchester meeting day with the helicopter and the car side by side. The helicopter times are our block-time range; the car times are the free-flowing floor.

  1. Helicopter out: leave London Heliport at 07:00, land in Manchester between 08:00 and 08:15.
  2. Meetings from about 09:00 until 15:00.
  3. Helicopter back: leave Manchester at 15:30, land in London between 16:30 and 16:45.

That is 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes of flying in the day. The same day by car is at least 8 hours 18 minutes on the road with no traffic, so you would be driving for most of a working day. The helicopter typically gives back about 6 hours 2 minutes across the there-and-back.

What the car number does not include

The 4 hours 9 minutes is a clean-road time. It has no rush-hour build-up around Manchester or on the M6, no roadworks, and no stop for fuel or a break. It also leaves out parking at the far end. Against that, a helicopter day has its own small overheads: you arrive 10 minutes before departure, give us passenger weights in advance, and you need a car or chauffeur from the landing site to your meeting, which is usually a short hop from Barton or the airport.

How we work out the times

For London to Manchester the straight-line distance is 136.7 nautical miles (157 statute miles). Flying that at a cruise of 135 knots takes about 61 minutes; we add 8 minutes for start-up, climb and the approach, which gives a block time of about 69 minutes. We then show it as a range, 10 per cent shorter to 12 per cent longer, rounded to the nearest five minutes: 60 to 75 minutes. The road figure of 4 hours 9 minutes (193 miles) is the free-flowing time from a routing engine, so it is a floor. Real journeys on the day are usually slower.

Central London and the other end of the trip

If your London start or finish is in the centre, the London Heliport at Battersea on the Thames is the landing point; Battersea Helicopter has the details of that site. For the airfields around the edge of London, see our London helicopter charter page and the London and Home Counties region. At the other end, read about helicopter charter in the North West. Nearby routes worth comparing are London to Liverpool and Birmingham to Manchester.

Flying the other way

The figures are the same in both directions: Manchester to London is 137 nm in a straight line and 60 to 75 minutes by helicopter. The car takes at least 4 hours 9 minutes (193 miles).

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fly London to Manchester by helicopter?

About 60 to 75 minutes from London Heliport to Manchester. Depending on the London and Manchester sites it can be anywhere from about 50 to 85 minutes. We give the figure for your pair of sites when we quote.

Is the helicopter faster than driving London to Manchester?

Yes. The drive is 193 miles and takes at least 4 hours 9 minutes with no traffic, so the helicopter typically saves about 3 hours 1 minute each way.

Can I fly there and back in one day?

Yes. A morning flight north and an afternoon flight back leaves several hours on the ground in Manchester and about 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes in the air in total. Talk to us about the latest sensible departure, because some sites close in the evening.

Does the same time apply from Manchester to London?

Yes. The distance is the same, so the block time is the same. The wind on the day can make one direction a few minutes quicker than the other.

How many passengers can the helicopter take?

It depends on the type. The largest helicopter we use on UK routes takes eight passengers and smaller twins take five or six. Weights matter, and we ask you to use soft bags where the hold is small.

Can the helicopter land at my office or hotel in Manchester?

Only where there is a suitable site and the landowner gives permission. We usually use the airport or the heliport at Barton and arrange a car, and we discuss private sites case by case, subject to landing permission and site suitability.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Cloud and wind can change the timings or stop a flight. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing.

How much does London to Manchester by helicopter cost?

The price depends on the helicopter, the sites and the date. Ask for a quote on our form, or see the helicopter hire price guides.
