The short answer

The Midlands and East of England have 24-hour airports such as Birmingham and East Midlands, helicopter-focused sites near Nottingham, small airfields at Wellesbourne, Halfpenny Green and Leicester, the Silverstone event heliport, and busy London-side airports at Stansted, Luton and Southend. Hours and permission differ widely, so we confirm each for your date.

Which Midlands sites are made for helicopters?

Among the heliports and airfields in the Midlands, two sites near Nottingham stand out. Nottingham Heliport is a purpose-built public heliport on the A46 Fosse Way south of the city, with a passenger lounge and café, open seven days a week though its times are not published, so we confirm them for your date. Nottingham City Airport at Tollerton has become helicopter-only: fixed-wing flying there was permanently withdrawn in September 2026, and it opens Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:00 (18:00 in summer) and Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 (library check, 29 September 2026). Both are covered on helicopter charter to Nottingham.

What about Cambridge?

Cambridge is a case where we do not guess. The airport site there has been sold and the flying company based there is relocating, so we only say what is verified. If your trip needs Cambridge, ask us and we will confirm the current arrangements and nearby alternatives such as Cranfield, Stansted or Norwich before we quote. Our page on helicopter charter to Cambridge gives the latest position.

Why do some small airfields close on weekdays or at dusk?

Most of the smaller Midlands airfields are run by flying clubs or small companies for their own members and open on set hours. Sywell shuts to visiting aircraft on weekdays; Tatenhill and Wellesbourne close in the late afternoon in winter; Gamston opens a little earlier on weekdays than at weekends. Charter flights have to fit those hours or an extension agreed in advance, often for a fee. Event heliports such as Silverstone work the other way: they run long hours on event days and not at all on others.

This is why we begin with the day of travel, not the airfield. A weekday meeting near Northampton, for example, is more likely to be served from Cranfield, Silverstone on a non-event day or a private site than from Sywell.

How do we choose a site in the Midlands?

Where the business is in a city, the big airports can win on hours and customs, but handling, slots and a long taxi can add time. Where the business is at a country house, factory or racecourse, a small airfield or the venue itself usually wins, provided the landowner agrees. For events, racing by helicopter and motorsport use dedicated helipads booked months ahead. We also keep an eye on noise, runway length for the aircraft, and whether a customs officer is available. For regional context see helicopter charter in the Midlands and in the East of England, and the main directory.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nottingham Tollerton still open to fixed-wing aircraft?

No. Fixed-wing operations there were permanently withdrawn in September 2026, so it is a helicopter-only airport.

Which Midlands airports are open 24 hours?

Birmingham and East Midlands, according to published information checked on 29 September 2026. Handling is arranged with a handling agent on the airfield.

Can I land a helicopter at Silverstone?

Silverstone Heliport runs on event days, including British Grand Prix weekend, with pre-booked landing slots. Slots sell out early.

Is Sywell open during the week?

Not to visiting aircraft, according to published hours; it opens to visitors at weekends only, by PPR through its online form.

Which airfield serves Sheffield?

Retford Gamston is the usual one, with East Midlands as a bigger alternative. We choose by hours and the road leg.

Do you cover Cambridge?

We confirm the current arrangements case by case because the airport site was sold. Please ask us before relying on any detail.

How do you handle a Grand Prix weekend booking?

We book a pre-assigned slot as soon as the plans are set and tell you the arrival and departure windows.
