Does The Grove have a helipad?
Travel writers and guests have described one for many years, and a 2021 guest review says the hotel has its own helipad, which makes a helicopter arrival practical. We have not seen a current published policy, so we do not treat it as a given. For each booking we ask the hotel, and every landing is subject to landing permission and site suitability.
Charter-A Helicopter is the helicopter charter service of Charter-A Ltd, which has arranged private flights across the UK and Europe since 2011. For helicopter hire The Grove clients, the previous version of this page recorded flights from Birmingham Airport, Battersea and Farnborough to the hotel. The hotel is in west Hertfordshire, close to the M25, so the road alternative from London is not long; the case for a helicopter is strongest from further away. The UK landing sites guide explains how private pads are treated.
Where do we land if the hotel cannot take a helicopter?
London Elstree Aerodrome is the closest of the airfields we use: a prior-permission helicopter and light-aircraft field with licensed hours of 09:00 to 20:00 or sunset; see helicopter charter Elstree. London Luton Airport is 13.2 nautical miles from Elstree, open 24 hours, with a slot and a nominated handling agent for every flight; see Luton. RAF Northolt is 7.1 nautical miles from Elstree and takes civil flights by prior permission; see Northolt. A chauffeur car does the last stretch, from Executive Global Travel.
What times can we expect?
From Elstree, the reference times are: Birmingham about 35 to 45 minutes by helicopter and around 1 hour 55 minutes by road; Oxford about 25 to 30 minutes against around 1 hour 18 minutes; Cambridge about 20 to 30 minutes against around 1 hour 16 minutes. From central London the helicopter reaches Elstree in about 10 to 15 minutes. These are times to the airfield; a landing at the hotel removes most of the road leg. See London to Birmingham for a longer route.
Arrive 10 minutes before take-off, give us a weight for each passenger and use soft bags. Check landing hours before you set the end time of the day.
What corporate day suits The Grove?
Conferences, board days, client entertainment and staff incentive days: the hotel is built for them, with meeting space and grounds, and it advertises corporate events. Check with the hotel for what it offers, because we only arrange the flight. For another Hertfordshire estate see Brocket Hall. For golf-led days see golf by helicopter.
