The short answer

A helicopter can land at licensed airports, unlicensed airfields, heliports, racecourse helipads and, with the landowner permission, private sites. Most need prior permission (PPR) and some need handling, customs notice or a slot. Hours vary, and several sites close on Sundays or after dark. We check each site for your date before we quote.

Want a price for this? Tell us where and when; we reply with options and a price for the whole aircraft.

Where can a charter helicopter land in the UK?

There are five broad kinds of site, and a single trip often uses two of them: one at each end.

  • Licensed aerodromes and airports. These hold a licence from the Civil Aviation Authority, publish their hours and normally have air traffic or radio service. Examples range from Birmingham and Manchester to Biggin Hill and Farnborough.
  • Unlicensed airfields. Flying clubs and private strips that do not hold a licence. They are often friendly to helicopters but rules on what can land, and on charter work, vary by site.
  • Heliports. Places built for helicopters, such as the London Heliport at Battersea, the Isle of Dogs, Manchester Barton or Leeds. They tend to have lounges and convenient city locations.
  • Racecourse and event helipads. Temporary or seasonal sites that operate on race days or event weekends, for example Aintree, Cheltenham, Epsom and Silverstone.
  • Private land. Hotels, houses, estates, shoots and company grounds. These need the landowner permission and a suitable surface and approach.

Each region page below lists named examples with what is notable about each. The full set is in our guide to UK helicopter landing sites.

Hours are as published in our library, checked 29 Sep 2026; they change, so we confirm them with your booking. Blackbushe is listed but its facts are not yet verified.

What does PPR mean?

For UK heliports and airfields, PPR stands for prior permission required. It means the aerodrome or heliport wants to know you are coming before you arrive, and you may not land without its agreement. The request usually gives the date, time, aircraft type, number of people and any customs or fuel needs. Some sites approve within hours; some want a day or more; event sites allocate slots well in advance.

A flight plan alone is not PPR. We make the request for every flight and hold the confirmation. If a site is shut, restricted or fully booked, we tell you early and propose an alternative from the same region.

What about customs and immigration?

For flights that arrive from or leave for another country, the site needs to be able to deal with border formalities. Large airports have Border Force on site; many smaller sites are not designated customs airports and need notice and a general aviation report filed in advance. The notice period varies from a couple of hours to a day or more, and some sites cannot handle international arrivals at all. Where this matters we state it on the region pages, and we arrange the paperwork with your booking. Passengers on international flights should bring passports or photo ID that matches the passenger details we send.

How do hours, noise and slots affect a flight?

Published hours are the first thing we check. Many smaller airfields close at dusk or in the late afternoon, some close on Sundays, a few close to visiting aircraft on weekdays, and some give extended hours only by arrangement and for a fee. Larger airports can have night restrictions or slot systems. Noise matters too: heliports in built-up areas often limit aircraft types or hours, and neighbours influence what is permitted on private land.

All hours on these pages are as published in the Charter-A airport library, checked on 29 September 2026. They change with the season and the airport, so treat them as a guide and not a promise; we confirm them for your date.

Can we land at a hotel, house or venue?

Often yes, with the landowner permission and a site that is suitable. The pilot needs a firm, level area clear of obstructions, a safe approach and departure path and enough space for the type of helicopter. Rules of the Air generally require aircraft to keep clear of people, vehicles, vessels and structures by a set distance except when landing and taking off, so the area around the landing spot matters. We never promise a permission before it is given. Landing at a hotel, house, venue or private site is always subject to landing permission and site suitability. Larger types such as the AW139 need more room than the smaller H145 D3.

How do you choose between landing sites?

We weigh up how close the site is to where you are really going, how easily your party gets from the helicopter to a car, how long the site is open, what customs or permission it needs and what kind of aircraft it handles. A site a few miles farther away with longer hours and a quicker turnaround often beats a closer one with restrictions. We also look at the road leg on the other side: if the car journey from the landing site is long, the saving shrinks. Our fleet pages explain how aircraft choice follows from the site.

Where to start: the five regions

Choose the region you need. Each page is a distinct directory with its own named examples.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a heliport and an airfield?

A heliport is built for helicopters, often close to a city. An airfield or aerodrome serves aeroplanes and helicopters, and may be licensed or unlicensed. Both can host charter flights, with different hours and permissions.

What does PPR mean at an airfield?

Prior permission required. You must ask the airfield for agreement before landing there. We make the request and hold the confirmation for every flight.

Can a helicopter land anywhere in the UK?

No. It needs a suitable site, the landowner permission and, in many places, the airfield or authority agreement. Landing at private sites is always subject to landing permission and site suitability.

Do I need a passport for a UK domestic flight?

Not for a flight within the UK, but ID is still wise. For flights to or from other countries you need the right travel documents, and we arrange the customs notice.

Are airfield hours the same every day?

No. Hours vary by season, weekday and weekend, and some sites close on Sundays or at dusk. Hours on these pages are as published and checked on 29 September 2026; we confirm for your date.

Which airfield is nearest to my venue?

Use the region page to find candidates, or ask us. We pick by distance, hours, permissions and the ground transfer at the other end.

Do you name the handling companies on the airfields?

We arrange any handling agent needed on the airfield as part of your booking, and tell you what to expect on the day.

Ready to fly?

Tell us where and when. We reply with options and a price for the whole aircraft. The phone line is open 24 hours.
