The short answer

Wales has Cardiff Heliport and Cardiff Airport plus small airfields; Northern Ireland has Belfast International, George Best Belfast City and Derry; and Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and the Isle of Man have airports with customs. Swansea licence is suspended, so we never promise a Swansea landing. Flights over water use twin-engine helicopters.

Where can a helicopter land in Cardiff and South Wales?

Among the heliports and airfields in Wales, Cardiff has two options. Cardiff Heliport sits in Cardiff Bay about two miles from the centre, open 09:00 to 18:00 seven days (09:00 to 17:00 in winter), with a lounge, a VIP lounge and a conference room; all movements are PPR and it is not a designated customs port, so international flights need a general aviation report filed in advance. Cardiff Airport is open 24 hours with customs and immigration on site and a 2,354 m runway. See helicopter charter to Cardiff.

Swansea is different. The airport licence there was temporarily suspended in August 2026 while improvements are made, so public-transport flights cannot be planned into it and we do not promise Swansea landings. Cardiff Heliport or Haverfordwest are the usual alternatives. See Swansea for the current position.

What changes when you cross water?

Crossing the Irish Sea, the Bristol Channel or the Channel means a twin-engine helicopter, a longer route plan with fuel margins and, in most cases, border paperwork. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man have their own customs and immigration arrangements and ask for a general declaration or general aviation report before arrival; Northern Ireland has no road link from Great Britain, so time savings are measured against ferries or flights. Belfast is covered on helicopter charter in Northern Ireland, the islands on the Channel Islands and Isle of Man page and Wales on helicopter charter in Wales.

How do I choose between sites here?

In Wales, the main choice is between the city heliport and the airport, and between a small airfield and a venue site in the hills. In Northern Ireland, the City airport suits meetings in Belfast centre and the International airport suits late and early flights. In the islands, the choice is usually obvious and constrained by hours, so the planning is about the return time. In all cases, landing at a hotel, estate or other private site is subject to landing permission and site suitability. The main directory sets out what PPR and customs mean.

Frequently asked questions

Is Swansea Airport open for helicopter charter?

Its licence was temporarily suspended in August 2026, so we do not promise Swansea landings. We offer Cardiff Heliport or Haverfordwest as alternatives.

Where do helicopters land in Cardiff?

Cardiff Heliport in Cardiff Bay, about two miles from the city centre, or Cardiff Airport. Heliport movements are PPR.

Which airport in Northern Ireland is open 24 hours?

Belfast International, with customs and immigration on site, according to published information checked on 29 September 2026.

Do I need customs paperwork for the Channel Islands?

Yes. Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney need a general declaration or general aviation report before arrival, which we file.

Is there fuel on Alderney?

No. Aircraft refuel in Guernsey, and the airfield closes early in the evening.

Can a helicopter land at Hawarden for Chester?

Yes, by PPR. It is in North Wales, serves Chester and needs 24 hours notice for customs.
