Picking your London and Birmingham sites

Start from the place you are leaving. Luton is the nearest full airport to Birmingham in the London ring, so it suits teams coming up the M1 corridor, and it runs round the clock, although every flight there needs a slot and a handling agent that we book for you. Northolt and Denham sit on the western side of London and are shorter transfers from the Thames Valley. Stansted suits Essex and Cambridgeshire starts.

In the Midlands you have a choice. Birmingham Airport has a 3,052 metre runway and customs on site, with private screening for business aviation, and the NEC is next door. Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green is a quieter airfield south-west of Wolverhampton, roughly 45 to 60 minutes from London Heliport, with published hours that stop in the early evening, so it is better for daytime meetings.

What the flight is like

The direct line runs north-west across the Chilterns and the south Midlands and passes close to Silverstone, which makes it a natural route for motor-racing days. Controlled airspace around Luton, Oxford and Birmingham shapes the actual track, and we plan it with air traffic control on the day. In winter, low cloud and short days matter more than distance on a flight this short, so we check the weather and your return timing together.

Why people fly London to Birmingham

Two groups use this route most. The first is business travellers who want two meetings in one day without the M40, and who value an unbroken working morning; see business helicopter charter. The second is event guests heading to the NEC, to Silverstone or to Villa Park, where a landing near the venue turns a traffic-bound arrival into a short one.

Because Birmingham sits in the middle of the country, it is also a common first leg: London to Birmingham, then on to Manchester or Leeds the same day.

Worked example: out and back in a working day

  1. Leave Luton at 08:00 for Birmingham Airport, arriving between 08:30 and 08:40.
  2. Meetings through the middle of the day.
  3. Leave Birmingham at 16:00 for Luton, back between 16:30 and 16:40.

From London Heliport the same day is 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes in the air. By road it is at least 4 hours 52 minutes of driving, so the helicopter typically gives back about 3 hours 22 minutes over the there-and-back.

What the car time leaves out

The 2 hours 26 minutes assumes free-flowing roads. In practice the approaches to Birmingham are slow at the start and end of the working day, and parking in the city can cost you another 15 minutes. On the helicopter side, allow 10 minutes before departure, and plan the car from the landing site to the meeting. For that last mile a chauffeur service can meet you on arrival.

How we work out the times

For London to Birmingham the straight-line distance is 82.9 nautical miles (95 statute miles). Flying that at a cruise of 135 knots takes about 37 minutes; we add 8 minutes for start-up, climb and the approach, which gives a block time of about 45 minutes. We then show it as a range, 10 per cent shorter to 12 per cent longer, rounded to the nearest five minutes: 40 to 50 minutes. The road figure of 2 hours 26 minutes (117 miles) is the free-flowing time from a routing engine, so it is a floor. Real journeys on the day are usually slower.

Flying the other way

The figures are the same in both directions: Birmingham to London is 83 nm in a straight line and 40 to 50 minutes by helicopter. The car takes at least 2 hours 26 minutes (117 miles).
