Bristol Airport and what to know before you book

Bristol Airport has a 2,011 metre runway, a dedicated business aviation facility and customs on site, subject to notified movements. Every flight is prior-permission-required, handling is mandatory and the airport is slot-coordinated, so we book the slot and the handling with your flight and need a little lead time.

The airport is south-west of the city, so for a meeting in the centre or at Temple Quay, we recommend arranging a car at the airport. If your destination is further west or north, the South West region page lists other sites, and Cardiff is a short hop across the Severn.

The route in practice

The direct line leaves London to the west and crosses Berkshire and Wiltshire before reaching the Bristol area, roughly on the line of the M4. Controlled airspace around Heathrow shapes the first few minutes, so the track from central London usually differs from a ruler line, and we plan it with air traffic control. The Cotswolds sit to the north of the route; guests heading for the Cotswolds or Cheltenham can often be dropped on the way.

Who flies London to Bristol

Bristol has a large aerospace and engineering sector, and a strong media, technology and financial community, so the route suits teams visiting clients in the city or at nearby business parks. It is also popular for a day that has two stops, such as Bristol in the morning and Birmingham or Cardiff by early afternoon: see Bristol to Birmingham. Our business helicopter charter page covers the practical side.

For arrivals into London from the west, the airport transfers by helicopter page is relevant too, because the flight can connect with a long-haul departure.

One day, two ways

  1. Leave Denham at 08:00 and land at Bristol Airport between 08:40 and 08:50.
  2. Meetings in the city and lunch.
  3. Leave Bristol at 15:30, land at Denham between 16:10 and 16:20.

From London Heliport the flying total for the day is 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. By road it is at least 5 hours 26 minutes, so the helicopter typically gives back about 3 hours 46 minutes.

What the road figure leaves out

The 2 hours 43 minutes assumes the M4 is flowing the whole way, which is optimistic at the Heathrow and Reading end. It has no stop, and no time to park in Bristol. The helicopter day has small extra steps of its own: arrive 10 minutes before departure, provide weights, and book the car from the airport. A chauffeur can handle that.

How we work out the times

For London to Bristol the straight-line distance is 95.3 nautical miles (110 statute miles). Flying that at a cruise of 135 knots takes about 42 minutes; we add 8 minutes for start-up, climb and the approach, which gives a block time of about 50 minutes. We then show it as a range, 10 per cent shorter to 12 per cent longer, rounded to the nearest five minutes: 45 to 55 minutes. The road figure of 2 hours 43 minutes (126 miles) is the free-flowing time from a routing engine, so it is a floor. Real journeys on the day are usually slower.

For a longer route in the same direction, compare London to Birmingham. If your London start is in the centre, Battersea Helicopter explains the London Heliport. We cover the area on our London page and in the helicopter against car journey times article.

Flying the other way

The figures are the same in both directions: Bristol to London is 95 nm in a straight line and 45 to 55 minutes by helicopter. The car takes at least 2 hours 43 minutes (126 miles).

Frequently asked questions

How long does the helicopter take from London to Bristol?

About 45 to 55 minutes from London Heliport. From Denham or Northolt it is roughly 40 to 50 minutes.

How long does the drive take?

At least 2 hours 43 minutes for 126 miles, free-flowing. The M4 often adds a lot more.

Can I get there and back in a morning or afternoon?

Yes. Because the flight is short, even a half day is possible: two flights of about 45 to 55 minutes leave a long block on the ground.

Does the helicopter fly into central Bristol?

We normally use Bristol Airport and arrange a car. Landing at a private site in the city depends on landing permission and site suitability, and we discuss it at booking.

How many people can fly?

Up to eight in the largest type; smaller twins take five or six. We need weights, and soft bags help.

Does the same time apply from Bristol to London?

Yes, give or take the wind. The distance is identical.

What if the weather closes in?

Low cloud or strong wind can delay or stop a flight. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing.
