Barton, Manchester Airport and the Leeds options
Manchester has two types of site. Manchester Airport is slot-coordinated, with a mandatory handling agent, and has a private terminal and an in-FBO customs service. Barton Aerodrome, on the west side of the city, is the dedicated helicopter facility, with a departure lounge, a cafe and free parking, and it is available round the clock for rotary bookings on request. See helicopter charter Manchester for both.
In Leeds, the heliport at Coney Park is strictly prior permission, half a mile from Leeds Bradford Airport, which sits at about 674 feet and can be affected by cloud when the lower sites are clear. Leeds East at Church Fenton, 08:00 to 18:00 daily with extensions on request, is the choice if you are heading on to York. See helicopter charter Leeds.
Why the helicopter matters on the M62
A free-flowing drive from Manchester to Leeds takes at least 1 hour 37 minutes; any incident, roadwork or weather on the Pennine section makes it much longer, and the helicopter is not affected by any of them. For a pair of meetings, one in each city, the extra time recovered is the difference between a day and a half-day. The time also compares well with the train for a group carrying equipment.
The reverse route works the same way. See Leeds to Liverpool and Birmingham to Manchester for related pairs.

A same-day plan
- Leave Manchester at 08:00, land at Leeds between 08:20 and 08:30.
- A morning in Leeds and an afternoon call.
- Leave Leeds at 16:00, land at Manchester between 16:20 and 16:30.
That is 40 minutes to 1 hour in the air for the round trip. The same trip by car is at least 3 hours 14 minutes of driving, so the helicopter typically gives back about 2 hours 24 minutes across the day. A route this short suits a chain of three stops rather than a single there-and-back. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing.

Where the figures come from
For Manchester to Leeds the straight-line distance is 37.7 nautical miles. At a cruise of 135 knots that is about 17 minutes; we add 8 minutes for start-up, climb and the approach, which gives a block time of about 25 minutes, and we show it as a range, 10 per cent shorter to 12 per cent longer, rounded to the nearest five minutes. The road figure is the free-flowing time from a routing engine, so it is a floor. Real journeys on the day are usually slower. The other routes are on the UK helicopter routes page, and helicopter against car journey times explains the comparison.
Flying the other way
The figures are the same in both directions: Leeds to Manchester is 38 nm in a straight line and 20 to 30 minutes by helicopter. The car takes at least 1 hour 37 minutes (63 miles).
